Ebony Merritte is joining us as the Supervisor for the Respite Program. Ebony is originally from Chase City, Virginia which she lovingly refers to as “Middle-of-Nowhere,” Virginia. She cannot even call it a one-horse town because they split custody of the horse with the other small town right next to her. Although she has lived in Maryland, Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and now North Carolina, that little town will always be home for Ebony. Ebony graduated high school in Stafford, Virginia from Colonial Forge High School in June of 2013 where she was the captain of her step team in her junior and senior years. In July 2013, she joined the United States Navy and went to boot camp. She wasted no time between her mom yelling at her and telling her what to do before moving on to a stranger yelling at her and telling her what to do. She worked as an Aircraft Handler (basically a baggage handler) and had the opportunity to assist in landing Air Force II carrying Joe Biden when he was Vice President. Although she did not get to meet him, it was still pretty cool that she got to assist in the safe landing of his plane. Due to an injury that led to her being honorably discharged, her time in the navy was short-lived, but she enjoyed every minute of it. After her time in the Navy, she found joy in teaching at different preschools before returning to school to earn a degree in sociology with an emphasis in social work. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and recently applied to East Carolina University’s Social Work Master’s program.
